David McConaughy was born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland sometime around 1762. His lineage supposedly is part of the Roberston Clan. David grew up in Northern Ireland and married a Miss Glissen (Beers 1893:642) or Elizabeth Hopkins (according to Welch 1904, The Ancestry and Kin of the Cowden and Welch Families, as cited by Bisbee 1987).
Her first name was Elizabeth, based on her tombstone inscription in the Hickory Cemetery that was examined by the author. The discrepancy may be due to David having more than one wife or to a mistake in last name by one of the cited references.
David McConaughy’s father apparently was named Alexander McConaughy according to Crumrine (1882:856). However, this needs to be confirmed from other records since other inaccuracies in Crumrine’s history have been noted.
Conversely, Alexander does appear to be an important family name and one that might be expected for David’s father.
